President’s Message

Welcome to the Junior League of Long Beach!

Established in 1931, the Junior League of Long Beach is a dynamic organization of women united by our shared commitment to building better communities.

The League provides meaningful opportunities for personal growth through comprehensive leadership development, community service, and lifelong connections. By welcoming all women, our organization thrives through its members’ diverse backgrounds, interests, and experiences. JLLB women consistently lift one another up and step up to the challenges our community faces with grace, compassion, and integrity.

As our more than 400 members have the special privilege of celebrating our 90th year in 2021, the League continues to grow its legacy as a driving force behind the kinds of initiatives and institutions that make Long Beach a healthier, more vital place to live. JLLB has played a pivotal role in launching more than 60 projects that have served as catalysts for lasting change, including the establishment of the Arts Council for Long Beach, Bethune Transitional Center, Casa Youth Shelter, Children’s Dental Health Clinic, Literary Women’s Festival of Authors, the docent program at Rancho Los Cerritos, and The Volunteer Center South Bay-Harbor-Long Beach.

In recognition of that history we are offering $90,000 in grants to our longtime community partners as part of a 90 by 90 anniversary campaign, already having gifted $30,000 for the creation of The Lounge at Billie Jean King Main Library as well as $30,000 to Rancho Los Cerritos to restore the historic herb garden and kick start a larger capital improvement campaign.

Through our current efforts to increase confidence and self-awareness among youth through character development and life skills programs, the League hosts Especially Me! interactive classes designed to empower fifth grade girls to be assertive, express themselves and have a strong sense of self. For nearly two decades, various Kids in the Kitchen programs have focused on teaching children and their families about healthy eating, cooking, gardening and wellness. Our LUNAFEST film festival showcases works by, for and about women. And, the JLLB also is a charter member of the Long Beach Human Trafficking Task Force, partnering with law enforcement and other organizations to eradicate human trafficking.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about the Junior League and how we are changing the lives of women and children in Long Beach. Please let us know if you are interested in finding out more about becoming a member, making a gift to support our mission, or partnering with us to make an impact.

Kind Regards,

Ashleigh Ruhl
