Literacy Program

Junior League of Long Beach Literacy Program began in early 2009 with a library renovation at Holmes Elementary School in Lakewood. As we worked with local schools to identify needs and ways we could help, it was found that a local elementary school’s library was in dire need of a makeover. And so the JLLB project team worked with Holmes’s Principal Kelly Koga, as well as a local artist, to sketch a design for the library walls. JLLB volunteers worked together with the local artist to paint book character figures on library walls. JLLB purchased books featuring the wall characters and planned an event for the unveiling and thus, the Literacy Night was born. JLLB volunteers hosted an evening of story time at Holmes Elementary, complete with dinner and beverages, for the students of Holmes Elementary and their families. The evening was such a smashing success that Holmes asked us to return the very next year.

Since the original event at Holmes Elementary, the JLLB has gone on to host a number of Literacy programs throughout the Long Beach Unified School District, as well as the United Methodist Center, and the Main Branch Public Library in downtown Long Beach.

If you are interested in having JLLB conduct a Literacy Program at your school or are interested in contacting other host schools for references, please contact us at community@jllb.org.
